Beauty of Okinawa

Okinawa, an island south of Japan, is a wonderful island to visit for many reasons. The culture alone is a pleasantly unique experience that everyone can enjoy.

It would not be terribly surprising if many students have not heard of Okinawa unless they have spent time in Japan, or they are a veteran.

I was lucky enough to get to enjoy two years living in Okinawa during my active service in the United States military. There are a number of our bases on the island having to do with events back from World War II.

The cultural experience was the greatest reward. A fantastic sort of blend due to influence from the Chinese and Japanese. I especially enjoyed seeing groups performing dances and songs so often when I would take a stroll down a street.

An absolutely huge event to see is the Naha Festival. This is a festival, and national holiday, that has been going on each year for quite some time. On October 10 the event begins this year with concerts, a parade, contests, performances, and activities that any student would enjoy.

The biggest event is the giant tug-of-war. Even saying giant may not give this event enough credit. The best part is that anyone can join. Both years I was in Okinawa there were a lot of our military that made sure to get out there and join in. Most of them made sure to bring back a piece of the rope to remember the fun.

There is more than just the culture to admire and enjoy. Okinawa is also a popular Japanese vacation location. There are resorts along the coasts with many activities such as snorkeling that I frequently enjoyed myself. Also many historic sites that would be especially interesting to students that enjoy history.

It must also be mentioned that the food is incredible. Even more so to seafood lovers as the choices are abundant. As a lover of seafood myself, I have not found any seafood dishes as wonderful as those in Okinawa that can compete in this country.

Any student who can take advantage of making a trip to Okinawa I fully encourage the experience. If there are any questions, or those who have anything to add then please do. I am a big fan of Okinawa, and I hope to visit again.
